Fossil Free WSU

ESA Subcommittee Meeting Minutes, April 5, 2022

Present: Simon Smith, Mason Burns, Ryan Culp, Hailey Smith, Simon Smith, Bill Engels

Bill said he would write to the President’s office to request a meeting with or presentation by the student members of FFWSU.  According to Mike Connell’s email, the office will be seeking input from WSU students in developing guidelines for ESG investing.  Ryan indicated that he could participate.  Bill said he could provide a power point and suggested talking points.

Ryan corrected the previous minutes on the number of posters displayed in the dorms: 150, not 115.  He will arrange to have the posters displayed again at this time.

Regarding the upcoming address by President Schulz to the Faculty Senate, Stevie will let us know what time it is scheduled and how we can attend.  He said his question for the President on the extent and timetable of WSU’s divestment from fossil fuels had been given to the Faculty Senate.

Stevie reported on the 3rd annual WSU Interdisciplinary Conference on Social Justice on March 25-26th.  There were approximately 50 attendees on Zoom for the opening keynote address by Roben White, who called attention to our student petition on divestment and shared the QR code.  Some of faculty who attended planned to refer the petition to their students.  Bill shared how Stevie gave an excellent overview of our campaign and shared the QR code during his presentation on the second day.

The current number of signatures on the petition was 506.  The group discussed advertising it during the Earth Week events hosted by ESA on April 11-15th.  Hailey suggested handing out a flier with each plant during the giveaway on the 14th.  Stevie will ask the keynote speaker, Bill Shireman, about pointing out the petition during his presentation on the 13th.

Stevie said he would send the petition to the student organizations.

The suggestion was made of having an end-of-the-year ESA banquet or block party one day during the week before finals.  It could be an opportunity to acknowledge the work that ESA and FFWSU have done over the past academic year, as well as advertise the petition.

Next meeting day and time:  Tuesday, April 19, 5:30-6 pm.
